Ellen Dubin :
The shy child who became an actress

Articles and Interviews

When I think about Ellen Dubin, the first adjectives that come to my mind are: sexy, funny, sweet and especially very warm and kind. The first time I met her was during the Gatecon 2005 boat cruise. I didn't know her then, I hadn't seen "Lexx", nor "The Collector". At a moment when I was alone, she came to me and said "Hello, I'm Ellen!"

After a few small gigs in many TV shows and TV-movies among which "Pacific Blue" (1998) and "Highlander : The Raven" (1999), Ellen Dubin finally gets a more important role in "Lexx" (1997 - 2002) she was in the feature film and then in six episodes. More gigs in TV shows and TV movies follow her success in "Lexx"  and in 2004 she finally get a bigger part in "The Collector" (2004-2006).

"The Collector" is a sci-fi series created by Ali Matheson, the daughter of the great Richard Matheson, sci-fi writer who wrote among many others "I am Legend", and her husband, Jon Cooksey. Elle Dubin is Jeri Slate, a journalist who investigates the strange things happening around Morgan Pym (Chris Kramer) who collects souls for the devil. Jeri Slate has an autistic son brilliantly played by Aidan Drummond, and in a few episodes we can see her deceased husband played by Andrew Jackson.

Stéphanie Kobza: When you were a young girl, did you dream of becoming an actress ?

Ellen Dubin : I was never one of these kids that dreamt of becoming an actor. I really wanted to be a ballet dancer. I was an extremely shy child and my parents enrolled me in a ballet class so I could gain confidence. It was there that I fell in love with performing. At the end of the year, we would have a recital and the would be the highlight for me. I loved dancing live in front of an audience and feeling their immediate reaction - moving them to tears and also making them laugh. What a beautiful feeling. It transformed me !

SK : What was your very first role ? (a play at school or anything like that)

ED : I played piano - so one of my first exposure to an audience was recitals. I was always nervous but once I was caught in the music, I became focused and relaxed.

One of my first paying role was a musical called "No No Annette" where I was a tall blonde squeaky voiced character with a funny walk and a leopard jumpsuit. I loved changing my look especially when an audience didn't recognize me after the show. I loved becoming a chameleon.

SK : When did you decide to become an actress ?

ED : I never really decided - it just worked out that way. When I was dancing, my ballet teacher would always say to me. "You are a better actress then a technical dancer because you are able to make an audience sit up and pay attention".

So I filled that in my head and went on to do musicals and all kinds of theatre - Shakespeare, farces, Molière, tragedies, improvisations. My knees started to bother me and so I was always starting to find other venues for my performing. And that is how it started by doing stage and getting caught up in a wonderful world.

SK : How did you get involved with sci-fi shows ?

ED : Again, that just happened. It wasn't really my choice. At the time there was a lot of shows of this genre. My agent sent me to an audition and I booked it. My first genre show was the wonderful vampire show "Forever Knight". And that began my work in sci-fi as well as building my wonderful fan base worldwide which I am grateful for. I have been very lucky that within the sci-fi genre, I have done all kinds of characters - from my way over the top Giggerota the Wicked (plus three other characters) in "Lexx" to a subtle mother/journalist Jeri Slate in "The Collector". There is a wide realm of roles even within the same sci-fi genre. It was also very rewording to be nominated for best supporting lead - a Gemini - in my series "The Colector".

SK : What is the favorite genre you've been acting in ? Is there a genre you didn't act in and would like to try ?

ED : I love doing all types of shows but I really adore sci-fi that is mixed with comedy and sensuality. That combination is fun to play and audiences really enjoy watching that. I am able to use my voice and movement training in roles like that.

I would love to do a period piece in film. Something set in Europe - a love story with fabulous costumes and great European.

SK : Thank you very much for taking the time the answer those questions. It very nice of you. Is there anything else you would like to tell your European French speaking fans?

ED: Merci du fond du coeur à tout mes fans en France - j'apprécie chacun de vous ! Thanks Ellen Dubin
